Valse Triste Op. 44 is one of the most haunting and widely loved short orchestral works of the early 20th century. Although today it is often performed as a standalone concert piece, it originated as part of the incidental music Sibelius wrote in 1903 for Kuolema (Death), a play by his brother‑in‑law Arvid Järnefelt.
