The hornpipe is both an instrument and a musical category. The instrument, a primitive type of clarinet with one ox horn covering the reed, a second providing a bell with finger holes, typically played the dance called the hornpipe, a lively piece pieced performed by one sailor. Hornpipes may date from the 14th Century.
