Book:
Frank Marocco and film music in Hollywood with accordion
Certainly not everyone would connect the quite-well-known accordion
with the dream world of film called Hollywood. However, the "folk-music
instrument" demonstrates far more its presence here than a
person would believe to be the case. As a very recent example, what
would the Disney film Ratatouille be without the accordion?
Among the leading musicians who are responsible for accordion sounds
in Hollywood films is Frank Marocco - in the meantime for 40 years.
He has performed in many legendary film classics like Doctor Zhivago
and The Godfather and has accompanied countless stars like Liza
Minelli, Luciano Pavarotti, and Frank Sinatra during his career.
Moreover-and more explicitly totally independent from that-he is
considered one of the most important jazz accordionists worldwide.
Accordionist Marocco's musical world is therefore especially multi-faceted
and can be compared with a road movie with its many track changes.
For the first time his career is described in detail, now the observer
can follow here how such a brilliant and artistically exceptional
star could develop among musicians.
Furthermore-and to be sure quite independent of that-he is regarded
among the most important jazz accordionists worldwide. The accordionist
Marocco's musical world is thus unusually manifold and with its
numerous "track changes" resembles a road movie. For the
first time his career is described in detail, for the first time
the observer can follow how such a brilliant and artistic outstanding
star could come into being.
As melodious book, the volume Jazz on the Road accompanied with
three full CDs describes Frank Marocco's musical life in extensive
texts enriched with many never-before published photos and intensified
with exclusive interviews.
It also represents aspects that extend beyond this musician's career
and delve into such questions as what it is like to work in Hollywood
music studios and how a person gains access.
From first-hand accounts the reader learns interesting details about
the film industry that so far have not been recorded and therefore
are provided for the first time.
With Frank Marocco as an example there is much to discover about
the accordion in Hollywood as well as his prominent artistic colleagues.
Novel, enlightening insight into the film musical world is revealed
here and that makes the book important for cinema fans. What happens
in front of the camera can be seen on the movie screen. What happens
behind the camera can be read about in this book.

CDs: Famous jazz standards
and classics - accordion solo and with band
Here one can select from pure accordion on the one hand and accordion
with band on the other. Whoever wants to hear how a Gershwin classic
like Embraceable You sounds on solo accordion and then would like
to compare the difference when the accordion plays together with
a band can experience directly from the first two of the three attached
CDs entitled "Jazz on the Road". Frank Marocco-and his
accompanying band-shows on a world-class level what can be squeezed
out of the famous melodies.
The artist impresses here in every setting with his lively and spontaneous
playing style and offers the finest in jazz. Likewise, the listener
experiences the music as in a live concert and comes face to face
with a broad, exciting repertoire, which is typical for jazz accordionist
Frank Marocco.
Swinging standards from the Golden Age of Jazz from the 1930s to
the present can be heard on the two Jazz on the Road CDs.
The third CD with the title Evergreens is a collection of jazz classics
and standards from Duke Ellington to Stevie Wonder in a high gloss
American production. All of Marocco's performances, which this world-class
accordionist presented up to the present on the stage in the course
of his singular career as Hollywood studio and jazz musician, flow
with characteristic charm and spirit in brilliant sound technique.
The effect on the listener is always immediately thrilling, as though
an absolutely top-notch musician were tangible through the jazzy
accordion sounds. One can hardly resist the light, swinging jazz
feeling with creative improvisations, marked rhythms, and sparkling
runs. Marocco's polished playing with his witty sound caprices lends
this CD trilogy the splendor of a great moment among recordings
with accordion jazz. |
