This musical encounter has a few surprises. What is encountered is left entirely up to the performer’s imagination. It begins mysteriously in minor, but opens up to some interesting harmonic changes using 9th chords to brighten the mood. The left hand receives a dexterity workout throughout, including a few additional scale passages. The work ends as some encounters often do—curiously mysterious at the beginning—then a few bright and enlightened exchanges—followed by mysteriously and quietly passing on into the night.
