Description: Amuletti CD by Petri Ikkela |

AMULET
/ A Musical Ethnicality
"If you imagine that all the things i have learnt and
experienced are like nuggets of gold in a stream, then this
disc is a gold pan vigrorously shaken roun and round, a search
for those nuggets: projects and line-ups, friends with whom
making music has been especially bright. Each in turn surfaces
and engages in dialogue with my accordion. The result is music
such as you may not hear anywhere else. Nothing I have learnt
is just its own self: not folk, tango, world, classical, traditional
or rock. All are filtered through one another and answer two
questions: what has music made of me and what have I made
of music?
Family and roots were one starting point. My great grandfather
was a conductor and professional musician back in the 19th
century. His son, another conductor by the name of Martti
Parantainen, found a piece for me to arrange. Merja Ikkela,
my sister and my teacher for many years, composed Mal de Mer
for this disc. The rest I found among the treasures of Finnish
folk music and the works of familiar composers. Having assembled
my repertoire, I noticed to my surprise that the name of a
bird features in many of the works of composers. I hope that
all those gallant birds will lend wings to my music. Finnish
from the home-nest perspective but the music of the whole
world froma bird's-eye view.
One of the leading and most versatile Finnish accordionists,
Petri Ikkela (b. 1965) is the only Finnish artist to play
not only 1, 2, 3 and 5-row instruments but also the free-bass
accordion, concertina, symphonium, accordina and bandoneon.
He studied in both the solo performance and the folk music
departments at the Sibelius Academy, obtaining a Master's
degree in 1998. He won the under-16 prize (exaequo) in the
national Accordion Competition at the Youth Arts Event in
1981 and the prize for 1- and 2 row accordions in Finnish
Folk Music Championships in 1984.
Petri Ikkela is nowadays a freelance musician, music teacher,
arranger, composer and conductor of a variety of light, classical
and folk ensembles. His pioneering work in Finland on the
Argentinean tango and the new Finnish tango drawing influences
from this has been highly significant. He has thus introduced
new international strains into Finnish music and combining
them with tradition, created interesting dimensions for the
pleasure of all who enjoy the company of music and whom he
has, as a member of or soloist with different ensembles, entertained
not only in Finland but also in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany,
France, Spain, Austria, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Egypt, Malaysia,
North Korea and the USA. |
